Show -16- constructed. As economic studies indicated considerable advantage in two-stage construction, the second barrel of each siphon was deferred for future construction. During the recent expansion program of the main aqueduct (1952-1956) the M.W.D. determined that the prospective needs of its constituent areas urgently required that the siphons be completed to ultimate capacity. During 1955-1956 preparation of specifications was commenced for the second barrel of the 47 double-barrel siphons easterly from San Jacinto tunnel. The first contract for this work was awarded on December 18, 1956, for a total sum of $8,492,547, and a second contract for the balance on January 22, 1957, for $7,272,336. It is planned that all contracts for this aggregate of 12 miles of siphon construction will be awarded early in 1957 and completed by the end of 1958 at an estimated total cost of approximately $17,500,000. The second barrel of the siphons between San Jacinto tunnel and Lake Mathews is less urgent, because of the substantial diversions at the west portal of the tunnel for delivery to San Diego County Water Authority and Eastern Municipal Water District. It is planned that specifications for this 9 miles of siphon-construction will be issued during 1957 and completed by the end of 1959, at an estimated total cost of $7,000,000. |
