Show -5- "But here comes another dry year, and even worse; so that at that time there is a very slim promise of a supply from the Owens River, and the condition is absolutely alarming. And this committee has got to come to our relief and give us the means of a larger and more secure water supply, or we are ruined. "Mr. Raker. Mr. Mulholland, not to interrupt you; but does not the same thing exist relative to these other cities east and southeast of Los Angeles? "Mr. Mulholland. Yes, sir; we are all in the same boat. But we are in a position geographically to help ourselves. The Colorado River there is not wholly appropriate; and we intend to appropriate some of the waste water there. We intend to render every assistance, financially and otherwise, toward securing that supply. The city of Los Angeles will take a noble part, I can assure you, in any project there that will be helpful to the country around there generally. p. 100 "Now, I want to tell you something else: The question of power has been talked about in these hearings. The question of power figures in this thing; and the question of where the United States Government is going to get a reasonable assurance of a return for money expended on this project. "The coming of the city of Los Angeles into this proposition, I think, adds amazingly, immensely, to the sureness of the return for power and the return to the United States Government. We promise to be very large customers. "It is impossible to get water from the Colorado River to the city of Los Angeles without pumping it anywhere from 1,000 to 1,200 feet high.
