Show -6- 2. Upper Feeder: (a) Location-extends northerly from headworks at Lake Mathews across the Santa Ana River (see photographs, Plates 2 and 3), to a point near Fontana, and then northwesterly through Cuca-monga, Ontario, Pomona, San Dimas and Glen-dora (a distance of 41.6 miles) to the east portal of the Monrovia No. 1 Tunnel; thence 20.4 miles westerly along the base of the San Gabriel Range and beneath the streets of the cities of Sierra Madre and Pasadena, to the Eagle Rock Control Tower near the west city limits of Pasadena. (b) Construction-completed as of June 30, 1940. This pipeline consists of welded steel plate pressure pipe (see photographs, Plates 4, 5 and 6) and concrete pressure pipe (see photographs, Plates 7, 8 and 9) ; that portion along the base of the San Gabriel Range consists of a series of concrete-lined pressure tunnels (see photograph, Plate 14) alternating with stretches of concrete pipe. Three major spillway structures have been built at drainage channels crossing the Upper Feeder, being a needle valve at Santa Ana River and overflow spillways at Puddingstone Flood Control Channel near San Dimas. (c) Function-to carry Colorado River water to the F. E. Weymouth Softening and Filtration Plant at La Verne, California (see photograph, Plate 10), and through its branches to the M.W.D. constituent areas. (d) Capacity-750 c.f.s. between Lake Mathews and San Dimas; and 510 c.f.s. between San Dimas and Glendale. |
