partment for the sums expended by the Department in investigation of and preliminary work upon said Colorado River Aqueduct Project up to the time of such taking over thereof by the District; and Whereas, this contract is the formal expression of that understanding and has for its consideration the things done, data furnished and property supplied by said Department, as herein particularly set forth; and Whereas, the District is hereby fully absolved from any other or further obligation to the Department than is herein stated, on account of such succession by it to the Colorado River Aqueduct Project so initiated by the Department and by the City of Los Angeles; Now, Therefore, for and in consideration of the mutual covenants and promises herein contained, the District, the City, and the Department do hereby mutually agree as follows: Article I. The Department and the City agree to sell, and the District agrees to purchase, all that certain real and personal property, and rights of way, hereinafter described as follows: 1. (a) All the right, title and interest of the Department and of the City in and to all those certain parcels of real property no longer required for the use of the City, situate in the County of Riverside, State of California, and more particularly described in Exhibit "A" contained and set forth on pages 1 and 2 of the Appendix attached to this agreement and made a part hereof, and including the water rights appurtenant thereto described in said Exhibit "A" and free and clear of all encumbrances and taxes excepting those set forth pertaining to each parcel in said Exhibit "A":
