Show The 1970-71 season brought to a conclusion Jack Gardner's 28-year basketball coaching career. Coach Gardner, who was head coach at Kansas State before coming to Utah in 1953, requested and was granted a one-year sabbatical leave which began in March. In his 18 years at Utah, Coach Gardner has compiled a record of 339-155. Upon his return, he will assume the position of assistant golf coach. The season also marked the end of the college careers of six Utah players. Leaving are reserves Bob Beam and Ken Reynolds and starters Mike Newlin, Ken Gardner, Jim Mahler and Early (Peaches) Laster. Newlin, Gardner and Mahler were starters throughout their sophomore and junior years as well. Laster, a junior college transfer from two years ago, earned a starting assignment at forward at the beginning of the season. The fifth Ute starter was Eddie Trail, a junior who shared the guard-line with Newlin. Newlin is one of three players in the history of the WAC to be selected to the First All Conference Team three consecutive years. He was third in the conference in scoring with a 22.0 average, the first time he hasn't led the WAC in that department.
