Show GYMNASTICS Fielding (or is it flooring) one of his best teams ever at Utah, Coach Larry Anderson guided his gymnastics squad to third place in the Western Athletic Conference. With the top six competitors placing in each event, Redskins place in four of the six events. Dennis Jones captured third place in the side horse event, while sixth places were being gathered by Sergio Luna in the horizontal bar competition, Ken Wright in the long horse event and Roger Haldeman in the floor exercise. Jones went on to place 11th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. It was the second year in a row he has placed 11th in the NCAA in that event. Defending champion New Mexico won the three-day meet with a score of 314.35. Brigham Young University was a solid second with 293.10 points. The Redskins nosed out Arizona State University for third place, piling up 288.10 points to ASU's 287.50. Colorado State and Arizona followed. The remaining two WAC schools, Wyoming and Texas at El Paso, do not compete in gymnastics. During the season, Utah compiled a 6-4 record which included two wins in three tries against BYU. In their only meeting with New Mexico, the Utes lost, 152.10-161.35. New Mexico's season mark was 13-0. The Redskins may be in for a difficult time in 1972. Jones, Wright and Luna are all leaving the squad via graduation.
