Show Prior to the start of the 1970 football season, Utah coach Bill Meek was thinking, "If we can just get past the first two games..." No one else seemed to be too worried, even though the Ute's first two games of the year were Western Athletic Conference clashes. FOOTBALL Because these were both home contests against the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of New Mexico, and the Redskins were forecast not to run into WAC trouble until they met the powerful and lightning fast Sun Devils of Arizona State in the ninth game of the season. But unfortunately, no one knows more about football than a football coach and, although Utah had little trouble in squashing UTEP, 44-20, in the opener, 22,000 home fans watched in disbelief as the rampaging Lobos of New Mexico overcame a 21-3 first quarter disadvantage to claim a 34-28 victory. Against the Miners of UTEP, Utah unveiled its brand new quarterback, Gordon (Scooter) Longmire who put on an impressive offensive display, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another. The most memorable moment of the evening, however, came near the end of the first half when Marv Bateman booted a 52-yard field goal, setting a Utah record. In game number two, New Mexico opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal. Utah then reeled off 21 straight points on runs by fullback Jay Hard-man and halfback Fred Graves, a Longmire to Graves aerial, and three PAT's by Bateman.
