Show Bateman's 30-yard field goal in the first quarter against Arizona was the total first half score. Longmire's three-yard scoring run near the end of the third period finally gave Utah some kind of substantial cushion. Then in the final period the Ute defense broke it open as linebacker Randy Hansen recovered a fumble in the Wildcat endzone and cornerback Dave Walker returned an intercepted pass 31 yards for the third TD. After tasting victory again, the Redskins tried their luck on the road once more against two non-conference foes. San Jose State grudgingly kept Utah's victory string alive, giving way, 13-9. Bateman put his team ahead, 3-0, in the first quarter, but the Spartans matched the field goal in the second, and temporarily moved out in front with another three-pointer in the third period. Later in the quarter Utah scored the only touchdown of the game on a pass from Longmire to Nosworthy. Each team added a field goal in the final period. Traditional rival Utah State was the fourth Utah victim in a row. The Redskins did all their scoring in the first half. Bateman's 42-yard field goal was the story of the first 15 minutes. In the second quarter, Dana Clyde, replacing Longmire at quarterback, rushed one yard for the initial touchdown and heaved a 59-yard TD bomb to Brown as the Utes recorded their second shutout of the season, 17-0. With two WAC games remaining and only one conference loss, the Redskins still had a shot at a share of the championship. But Arizona State was just too much for them, and ran away with a 37-14 victory. 222 |
