Show PUBLICATIONS COUNCIL GETS RED OUT Fred Emery was appointed to the Chair of Publications vacated by Wallace Bennet last year. A former Academic Vice President, the law professor made certain at the beginning of the year that all knew he was concerned with preserving freedom and eliminating expense. Assisted by a student/faculty council, he proceeded to do just that. Wasatch Front and Chronicle both remained within budget, but Utonian, after careful examination, was deemed a foreordained fiscal failure. Several long delays followed the primary discussion, during which alternative solutions to the yearbook's projected deficit were compared and,its contract remained unsigned. Finally, in a joint Publications/ASUU meeting, the Council resolved to reduce Utonian to 256 pages, eliminating class portraits and some of the essay section of the book. The contract was signed, enabling the Utonian Staff to proceed with vigor. Financial straits for publications are tight. The Council denied Utechnic, the campus engineering magazine, membership when it applied out of financial need, pointing out that it was a special-interest publication. 120 |
