Show TENNIS Front Row L-R Jim Osborne, Dan Bleckinger, Coach Harry James, Steve Krulevitz. Back Row L-R Dave Harmon, F.D. Robbins, Scott Bennion, Dale Fritz, Bill Bennion. Always strong on the tennis court, Utah continued to be a top contender in 1970. The Redskins took a 12-4 season record into the Western Athletic Conference Championships held at the Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis Club and walked away with second place. The Utes scored 19 points to Brigham Young University's 22. Arizona was third with 13. Three Utah players won singles titles. Senior Dan Bleckinger took the number two singles competition, Freshman Steve Krulevitz won number six. Sophomore F.D. Robbins was defeated in the number one singles championship match by BYU's Zdravko Mincek. All three Utah doubles teams advanced to the final match, but all were denied a championship. A month later, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships were also held in Salt Lake City, with Utah showing as the seventh best team in the country. UCLA, Trinity and USC were the top three finishers respectively, and BYU, who had bested Utah in the conference meet, was eighth. Robbins and Bleckinger were selected to the All America team. And the general concensus of the coaches at the NCAA meet was that Krulevitz was one of the best freshmen in the meet. Coach Harry James will be without Bleckinger, Fritz and Scott Bennion for the 1971 season, but will still have the makings of a powerful team. |
