Show est grappler with a 26-0 overall record, won the championship in the 158-pound class the year before. Other Redskins who worked their way into the final round were Sam Arishita in the 118-pound class, Balvino Iri-zarry, 126 pounds, Scott Tennis, 177 pounds, and Joe Davis, 190 pounds. Tennis was another big gun for Utah during the season, ending up with a 23-2-1 mark. Arishita collected 21 wins against two losses and heavyweight Kurt Bellock registered a 19-5-2 record. During the regular season, Coach Marv Hess' grapplers recorded 13 victories and six defeats. Only one of those six losses was to a conference rival. Brigham Young slipped by the Redskins, 17-21. Much of Utah's front line talent will be graduating after this season. Shepherd, Tennis Arishita, Irizarry and Davis will be leaving, along with two-time varsity letter winner Frank Iaco-bazzi and three-time letter winner Jeff Winderlin, who sat out most of the season with an injury. 227 |
