Show 'V. GOLF The 1970 season was the best yet for the Redskin golf team, at least since the beginning of the Western Athletic Conference, as the Ute linksters placed third in the seven-team WAC championship meeting. The eighth conference school, Texas El Paso, does not have a golf team. Raleigh Wilson led the Redskin team with a 36-hole total of 218, good enough for sixth place. Lynn Summer-hays of Utah was one of six golfers to finish with a score of 219, and Tom Christensen helped the Ute cause by carding a 220. Judd Jackson contributed a 223 score. Two other Utah players, Greg Sharp and Dave Jenkins, turned in scores of 226 and 229 respectively. Perennial power Brigham Young Uni- versity won the championship match held at the Hidden Valley Golf Course in Salt Lake City with a team score of 848. Arizona State University was a distant second at 871. Utah's score of 880 was four strokes better than that of fourth place Arizona. The individual champion of the meet was Chip Cariss of the Cougars who shot two 68s and a 69 for a three-round total of 205. The third place finish stood in sharp contrast to the Redskins' sixth place effort in 1969 in Phoenix. All four of the top Ute linksters, Wilson, Sum-merhays, Christensen and Jackson, have returned for the 1971 campaign. 229 |
