Show selves. They came out gunning in the second period and scored their first TD in less than a minute. That was the fatal quarter for the Redskins as New Mexico outscored them, 28-0. Trailing by 10 points, Utah tried to come back as Longmire found split end Jim Brown with a five-yard scoring pass late in the third quarter. Minutes later the Lobos answered with another field goal to build their lead back to six points, hardly insurmountable. But neither team was able to crack the scoring column in the fourth period, and two field goals stood as the margin of victory for New Mexico. The Redskins took a vacation from 7-3 triumph of 1969 over Oregon State in Portland, but it was not to be repeated in '70. Again Utah took the early lead on an eight-yard pass from Longmire to tight end Dale Nosworthy and a 20-yard runback of a blocked punt by defensive tackle Bob Peterson. Bateman's two conversions gave Utah a 14-0 lead with four minutes gone in the second quarter. OSU finally got its offense going towards the end of the half, scoring on an 11-yard pass. The conversion attempt was blocked. Longmire boosted Utah's lead to 21-6 in the third period with a 49-yard TD run. But the Utes were rapidly establishing the reputation of a poor second half team. OSU did the rest of the scoring, showing eight points in the third quarter and 17 in the fourth to post a 31-21 win. After three consecutive defeats, momentum was just something the Utes read about. And they certainly could have used some with two more WAC games fast approaching. But the Redskins were far from dead and rose to the occasion both times, downing Wyoming, 20-16, in Laramie and Arizona, 24-0, at home. Utah learned that being ahead at the start isn't everything. The Cowboys led 7-0 at halftime, and widened their margin to 13-0 in the third period. But in the time remaining in the third, the Utes scored 13 points of their own on two TD passes by Longmire. Wyoming regained the lead in the fourth period on a field goal but Utah wrapped it up when defensive end Joe Petricca returned a blocked punt. |
