Show The Class of 1911 HE Sophomores didn't make as big a stir this year as we thought they would-we didn't think they would. In the annual flag rush they were so completely "sat upon" that it was found impracticable to count the Freshman hands on the flag. The football game of the class series resulted in an overwhelming victory of 24 to 0 for the class of '11. Only once again did the Sophomores test the physical prowess of their younger opponents, and as they lay on their backs on this occasion watching the '11 numerals flying from the flag-pole, they took a solemn oath that if some divine power would only save them this once, they would never invoke the wrath of the Freshmen again. Divine interposition came in the form of a professor, and it must be said to the credit of the Sophomore class that they have faithfully kept that oath.In the final football game of the class series, luck was against the Freshmen. Although they fought with characteristic spirit, because of snow on the field they were unable to advance the ball against their heavier opponents, and were defeated by the Seniors on a fluke play. The championship in inter-class debate also rested between the Seniors and Freshmen, as the Juniors did not enter. In the first encounter no decision was given because of a difference in the interpretation of the question by the two teams. A second contest was called before the John R. Park Club. The Senior class was considerably excited over the affair, and the Freshmen, fearing that a victory by them over the Seniors might hurt the reputation of the school (the class of '11 holds the welfare of the University above any personal gain), went, as martyrs, quietly to defeat. Not only have the Freshmen shown an eagerness to "do things" as a class, but in every department they have demonstrated their absolute loyalty to the University. They gave the most successful class ball of the season. Six of the men who made their U's in football belonged to the Freshman class. There are six men in the class who have already made their track U's and many who give promise of doing so this spring. In dramatics they have taken a leading part, winning four out of the ten places in the cast of "You Never Can Tell." They have also taken a prominent part in basket-ball and cross country running. In short, in any activity, whether it is a "rough and tumble," an athletic contest, a debate, or a social function, the class of '11 has stood, and we trust always will stand, for clean, energetic work and a greater University.BY ONE OF IT.(78) |
