Show Inter-Class FootballITH the Thanksgiving game the Varsity football season came to a close and some other outlet was needed for the escape of the pent-up enthusiasm of the students. The result was the unwonted interest displayed in the interclass football series, which had, contrary to custom, been delayed till after the regular season. Each of the classes felt that they had a good chance to carry away the pennant, and manifestations of activity were soon seen in each camp. Even the Seniors, overworked as they were, brought out a bunch of "never-wasses," and under the direction of a couple of "has-beens," at the end of a week's practice had a real team in the field. The Junior team was composed almost entirely of experienced men, consequently everyone thought that this team could win the series with very little effort. The Freshmen were expected to make a hard fight, and the outcome justified this expectation. They had very little trouble in disposing of the Sophomores. The game, played Dec. 3, was never in doubt, and the score, 24 to 0 in favor of the Fresh-ies, showed the real strength of the teams. The next game, between the upp er classes, was not very satisfactory, from a Junior's point of view. On one occasion the linesman, according to his own admission, unlawfully took the ball from the Juniors when they were within a few yards of the goal and making consistent gains. At another time the Juniors scored, but were compelled to bring the ball back by a questionable decision of the referee. During the opening half, however, '09 succeeded in earning another touchdown, and had the game won until, on the worst kind of a fluke, the Seniors scored near the close of the game. They kicked goal, and the Juniors took their medicine gracefully, and dropped out of the series with the score 6 to 5 against them. The final game between '08 and '11 was played on a sloppy, snow-covered field, the Seniors making the only score early in the first half. The two teams fought very evenly during the rest of the game, but neither was able to cross the goal line, and the final score stood 5 to 0.As winners of the series, the Seniors were awarded jerseys by the Athletic Council, and, irr addition, established a temporary title to the cup which has for three years been in the possession of the '07 class.(190) |
