Show University of Utah Glee Club OR the first time in its history, the University this year launches out into musical circles with a glee club. Thanks to the efforts of several progressive students, we can now boast of as fine a collection of bassos and tenors as any school in the West. Active among others in bringing this about were Will Nuttall, the manager, who first suggested the idea and assisted materially in pushing the business end, and Mr. Kenneth Williams of the Chemistry department, at one time leader of the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club, whose worth we can in no wise over-estimate.Following the election of officers a diligent canvass was made for musical talent. It mattered not whether this talent lay hidden within the profound depths of a Cornwall, or bubbled forth from the tiny throat of a Peterson. All were equally welcome. When from the many applicants twenty-five were finally accepted, rehearsals began with a vim.The club made its first public appearance at the Utah-Colorado debate, and scored a great success with four of its favorite selections-"The Nonsense Medley," "City Choir," later sung in chapel as "The Chapel Choir;" "Hush, Yo' Honey, Hush!" and "Utah, She's the School for Me." As expected, most all of the fellows were somewhat affected with stage fright, yet stalwart Cornwall showed his undaunted fearlessness as he strutted on alone, some fifteen feet ahead of the bunch, as if leading them to the rescue of some captured flag, and turned with such an injured expression when he found the others so presumptuously close to him. Cannon came on, gazing around as if looking for someone. From his giggling during the entire first number it was quite evident that he had found "her." But aside from these few distractions the renditions were eminently satisfactory if one may judge from the applause.Since then the club has appeared several times, both in and outside of college circles, with marked success. The songs are always novel and continually manifest the spirit that is behind the organization-the spirit to do. It has assisted materially in the programs of other college organizations, such as the Engineering, Medical, and Debating Clubs, and was the mainstay in the minstrel show. It likewise constitutes the male portion of the University Festival Chorus. There are brilliant prospects for the progress of the club next year. Plans are already under way looking toward the organization of a mandolin and banjo club to work in conjunction with the Glee Club, which will lend untold attractiveness to the programs rendered. In fact, everything connected with the club has received a splendid start this year and no obstacle now looms up which can in any way hinder the progress of the University's popular musical organization.(146) |
