Show A. BENNIONJ. STOCKMANInter-Class DebatingIn accordance with a custom established last year, a series of interclass debates was held for the championship, and for the possession of the silver trophy cup which was then in the hands of the '09 class. The first debate took place December 12, the Freshmen and Sophomores discussing the question, "Resolved, That the United States Government should maintain a parcels-post system." A close contest resulted in a victory for the negative, supported by Freshmen J. E. Pixton and H. E. Wooley. Owing to the fact that their best men were busy with the Colorado debate, the Juniors did not enter a team, and the contest resolved itself into a race between the Freshmen and Seniors.Adam Bennion and Jay Stockman were selected as the Senior team, and Hugo Anderson replaced H. E. Wooley for the Freshmen. On January 13 these two teams argued the question, "Resolved, That oriental children should be excluded from the primary public schools of the United States." The judges declined to render a decision in this debate, alleging that the two arguments were along such radically different lines that no fair decision could be made.Accordingly, the same teams met again and discussed the question, "Resolved, That corporations doing an interstate business should be required to take out a federal license, constitutionality being conceded." Though the Freshmen advanced vigorous argument for the affirmative, the decision was rightly given to the Seniors, who will hold the "cup" until next year.U16) |
