Show The Year's WorkAside from the fact that only one interstate debate was held, the year's work has been very encouraging. A lively interest has been shown throughout the year, and the number of aspirants for forensic honors has been gratifying. Nine men tried for places on the Colorado team, the three men who debated being selected, with Frank Holman as alternate, after a lengthy contest. At the beginning of the year, J. M. Carlson, then manager of debating, was elected president of the University Debating Club. In February of this year a new organization came into existence, when the John R. Park Club was launched. A board composed of R. S. Olsen, Benjamin Howells, J. L. Brown, Harold Holman, and Clarence Gates, was selected to manage affairs, with George Roberts, secretary, and E. S. Benson, treasurer. The object of the club is to promote all forms of public speaking, and for this purpose meetings are held every Thursday evening in the City and County building, where topics of interest to men in all the various departments of the University are discussed. The club promises to be a worthy monument to the memory of our departed president, John R. Park.Recently a very commendable plan has been adopted of promoting a series of debates, under the auspices of the University, between teams representing the high schools of the state. The final contest this year will probably be held on Saturday night after the State High School track meet at Cummings field. It is these things that interest our high school students in the University, and it is upon these students that we depend largely for material to defend our school on the forum, in the not very distant future. The plan will surely prove a success.(117) |
