Show The track season opened during the last week in April, after about seven weeks of preparation. During this period not all of the members of the team took an active part in preparing for the track meets to follow, and the inevitable result was a woeful state of unpreparedness for the first meets. The dual track meet with the Brigham Young University of Provo was won by a score of 73 to 40. Both schools had their full teams present at the meet, and though the meet was held at Provo, our school was not at a disadvantage. Rooters were present in such numbers that Provo did not have much the advantage on this score. The track was faster than the track on Cum-mings field, hence "U" athletes surprised themselves by cutting close to the records. The first dual meet with the University of Colorado was held in 1907. The day was not ideal for a track meet, so no records were broken, yet the time in the different events was by no means slow. Unfortunately, only ten men on each side were allowed to participate in the meet. However, Utah came within seven and one-half points of doubling the score of her opponent. The State track meet was held in a sea of mud. No records were broken; in fact, it was extremely difficult to approach the excellent records made in other years. The five schools participating in the meet put forth their best efc forts, but the University came within five and one-half points of doubling the score of the nearest competitor. The first athletic conference held in the State occurred at Wandamere just after the close of school. The University of Utah entered its regular track team, as did the B. Y. U., while the Y. M. C. A. entered an aggregation of amateur athletes under its banner. The Y. M. C. A. had an excellent collection, but despite their best efforts they were only able to come within nine points of the record of the University. This meet brought to a close a very satisfactory season in track athletics.(194) |
