Show Medical SchoolDo not think, gentle reader, because the Medics dwell among strange odors and unpronouncable names, that they hail from another sphere; do not think because you seldom see them at class meetings or rough houses, that they never enjoy that phase of a college man's life; do not think, as you see them silently pass from one class to another, lugging their heavy grips, that they have no spunk nor ginger; do not think, if ever you enter their retreats and find them laboring over some massive volume, tearing themselves away only long enough to beg a momentary audience with the Doctor, the great "I Am" who, fortified behind his gruff voice, dignified mien and almost superhuman knowledge, sits in his council chamber, that they are without love of freedom, for as you learn to know these Medics, you find them strangely human. They are a clan unto themselves. Separated, as they are, by their course from the rest of the school, they have banded themselves together, and here they have their jokes and their flings, their songs, rough houses, and jollifications, their trials and their successes.Along with their boning and grinding, they have had time for some social doin's. Besides their busts, feeds, and roller skating parties, they have given two very successful and unique dances, put a winning team on the stage in the athletic extravaganza, and this year put a booth in the '09 Prom as interesting and attractive as any there. They also sometimes indulge in a mild way in athletics, deserting their books long enough for a game of football, basket-ball, or baseball, then promptly to return to their retreats. When it comes to their school, they are certainly proud of its splendid growth and achievements. Starting four years ago with two instructors and two medical subjects, they now have ten instructors, while complete Freshmen and Sophomore courses in medicine are being given. From twenty-one men they have grown to thirty-six. The men who have finished the course here and have gone East are not only doing the medical school proud, but Utah as well.(128) |
