Eine Reaktion war unvermeidlich. -v on dieser Reaktion zu sprechen, fiihle ich mich beftihigt, denn dieses Werk ist nach dem Werk von Louis Sullivan der erste folgerichtige Protest in Ziegeln und M6rtel gegen dieses klggliche Verderben, und ist ein ernstlicher Versuch, einige industrielle und Bsthetische Ideale zu formulieren, die eines Amerikaners Heim ruhig und vernunftgem%s gestalten und dazu beitragen kb;nnte, es sch6n zu machen. Dies kann aber nur dann der Fall sein, wenn er es mit seinen eigenen Werkzeugen, ohne Missbrauch derselben geschaffen und es sich selbst in jeder Hinsicht gewidmet hat. Die Ideale von Ruskin und Morris in ihrer blinden Opposition gegen die Maschine, und der Unterricht in der Akademie der Beaux Arts sind bis auf unsere Tage die massgebenden Autori- ttiten in Amerika gewesen, und haben bestandig unsere Gelegenheiten sowohl verwirrt, wie sie sie such in mancher Hinsicht uns offenbart haben. Auch der Amerikaner, der von diesem Zustand der Dinge angewidert ist, da er vor seinen Augen die schijne Harmonie in der Architektur eines englischen Dorfes, eines europ8ischen kindlichen Stgdtchens oder in dem grossangelegten Plan von Paris hat, ist leicht iiberredet worden, dass er nichts Besseres tun kdnnte, als einen Stil anzunehmen, der ihm am wenigsten fremd ist, an diesem festzuhalten und ihn immer weiterzupflanzen ; eine in jedem Fall nutzlose parasitische Handlung. New York ist, was den gusseren Schmuck betrifft, eine Reklame der Akademie der sch6nen Kiinste, wghrend das lnnere seiner Gebaude den ameri- kanischen Ingenieur verrHt. Andere Stidte sind New Yorks Fiihrung gefolgt. Unsere besten Wohnhtiuser sind meistens verinderte und ausgeschmiickte Beitrsge eng- lischer Architektur, mit Vorhallen und allem Komfort: das Resultat -- ein elender Mischling in den meisten Fillen. Ihr Anstrich ist ein iusserst abgeschmackter, und man merkt ihnen an, dass sie sich des Mangels der Traditionen und des Versuches der schnell reich gewordenen Biirger, die Traditionen ,,ready made"""" zu kaufen, schmerzlich bewusst sind. Sie erstrecken sich weit vor- wBrts, sind aber doch mit dem Gesicht rtickwsrts gewandt, und sind so charakteristische Beispiele eines deutlichen Verfalles geworden. Der Hauptpunkt in allem diesen ist die Tatsache, dass die Wiederbelebung der Ideale einer organischen Architektur mit diesem schnell sich vermehrenden Flug ausl&discher Narrheit wird kgmpfen miissen. Selbst der einigermassen gebildete Amerikaner, der, entgegen seiner gewhhn- lichen Weise in anderen Dingen, sich seiner Niedrigkeit in betreff von Kleidung und Architektur peinlich bewusst ist und ins Ausland geht, urn sicher zu sein, dass sie beide richtig sind, be- unruhigt sich nicht lsnger dariiber, ja vergisst beides, sobald er einmal die Gewissheit hat - ein Zug, der charakteristischer fiir den Osten als fiir den Westen ist.
