Show Beton, iiberkleidet mit keramischer Mosaik, die DBcher aus Ziegeln. Der glasartige Ziegelstein, der an den Aussenmauern verwandt ist, ist mit bronzierten Gliedern an den Winden und Pfeilern des Innern verarbeitet. Der Ziegel auf diesen inneren OberAPchen ist in dekorativem Sinne als Mosaik gebraucht. Das Holzwerk ist durchweg aus gebeiztem Eichenholz. Ein Laubengang verbindet das Haus mit einem GewBchshaus, welches seinerseits durch einen gedeckten Weg mit dem Stalle verbunden ist. Tafel XxX11. Deckblatt. Das Larkin-Geb&ude ist eines aus einer grossen Gruppe van Fabrikgebxuden in dem Fabrikdistrikt van Buffalo. Es wurde gebaut, um den gesamten Verwaltungsorganismus der Larkin-Company in hellen, gesunden, gut ventilierten Kiumen unterzubringen. Der Rauch, der L&-m und der Schmutz, die fiir solche Lokalitnt charakteristisch sind, machte es unbedingt notwendig, dass alle Busseren FlXchen so eingerichtet wurden, dass kein Schmutz an ihnen haften konnte, und dass der innere Bau unabhPngig van der Umgebung ausgefiihrt wurde. Das GebYude ist eine einfache Lijsung gewisser notwendiger Bedingungen. Sein Ausseres ist eine einfache Klippe van Ziegeln, deren einziger ornamentaler Schmuck der Ausdruck des zentralen Seitenfliigels ist, der durch die skulptur- artig geformten Pfeiler an jedem Ende des Hauptblocks gebildet ist. Die Maschinerie der ver- schiedenen Apparatsysteme, die Rbhrenschafte, die dazu gehgren, die Heizung und Ventilations- lufteinmundungen und die Treppen, die such als Rettungsleitern dienen, sind im Plan in vier gleiche Teile geteilt und ausserhalb des HauptgebBudes an den vier Busseren Ecken angebracht, so dass der game Kiichenraum fiir Arbeitszwecke freiliegt. Diese Treppenrxume sind van oben erleuchtet. Das Innere des Hauptgebxudes bildet demgemPss &en einzigen grossen Raum, in dem die Hauptflure Gale&n bilden, die sich nach einem grossen Zentralhof tiffnen, der ebenfalls van oben erleucbtet wird. Alle Fenster der verschiedenen Stockwerke oder ,,Galerien"""" befinden sic11 sieben Fuss iiber dem Fussboden, so dass der Raum unten fiir Stahlkammern benutzt werden kann. ijberall sind Fenster, und das Gebzude ist tatsPchlich gegen Schmutz, Geruch und L&-m versiegelt. Die frische Luft wird ihm in grosser Entfernung vom Erdboden durch Luftrb;hren, welche weit cber die DBcher hinausragen, zugefiihrt. Das Innere ist durchweg aus glasartigen cremefarbigen Ziegelsteinen, Leisten, Tiir- und Fensterrahmen, Treppengelznder, Treppen und Flue aus ,,magnesite"""" van derselben Farbe. Alles dies wird in dem Geb$i.ude selbst angefertigt, und zwar mitt& einfacher h&erner Formen, in den meisten Fillen an dem Platz selbst, fiir den sie bestimmt sind. So wurden die dekorativen Formen notwendigerweise einfach, besonders deshalb, weil dieses Material beim Formen heiss wird und sich bei diesem Vorgang etwas ausdehnt. Alle Einrichtungs- gegenstsnde sind aus Stahl und gleichzeitig mit dem Bau geplant worden. Die Vestibiile van beiden Strassen und das Hauptvestibiil, sowie die Toiletten und Ruhezimmer fiir die Angestellten be&den sich alle in einem Nebengebiude, welches das Licht van dem Hauptgebjiude so wenig wie mb;glich entzieht. Im fiinften Stock ist das Restaurant fir die Angestellten und in den Zwischen- stockwerken iiber Kiiche und BPckerei an jedem Ende des Stockes sind Gew%ch&.user, die nach dem Hauptdach fiihren. Dies alles zusammen bildet die Erholungsstitte fiir die Angestellten. Die Kosten des Baues, welcher v&t&dig feuersicher ist , betragen inklusive der modernen Heizung, der Ventilation und allem sonstigen Zubehijr, doch exklusive szmtlicher Metalleinrichtungsgegenst2nde, nur wenig mehr als der Durchschnitt erstklassiger Fabrikgebiude, I 8 Cents per Kubikfuss. Deshalb kann das Werk ebenso Anspruch darauf erheben als ein Kunstwerk angesehen zu werden, wie ein Ozeandampfer, eine Lokomotive ocler ein Kriegsschiff. 25 |
