Show Das Wesen der SchGnheit ist fiir uns ebenso geheimnisvoll wie das Leben. Alle Versuche, auszudrucken, was sie ist, wiirden ebenso taricht sein, als wenn man das Fell der Trommel ab- nehmen wollte, urn herauszufinden, woher der Ton kam. Aber wir kb;nnen mit Nutzen diese Wahrheiten der Form und des Baues studieren, ebenso wie gewisse Tatsachen der Form mit Bezug auf ihre Funktion, materielle Ziige der Lime, die charakterbestimmend sind; gewisse Ge- setze des Baues, die der Natur, von der wir selbst nur ein Teil sind und mit der wir eins sind, innewohnen: Wahrheiten also, in Harmonie mit unserem innersten Wesen und folglich von uns als gut befunden. Wir fiihlen instinktiv, dass das Cute, Wahre und Schdne eins ist in den letzten Konsequenzen einer analytischen Untersuchung. In uns ist eine gottliche Bestimmung des Wachs- turns und zwar auf ein ganz bestimmtes Ziel hinleitend: demgemgss wshlen wir als gut alles, was in Harmonie mit diesem Gesetz steht. Wir streben nach dem Licht geistig, wie die Pflanze physisch, wenn wir gesund und nicht iiberbildet sind. Wenn wir ein Etwas als sch6n empfinden, so ist es, weil wir instinktiv die Richtigkeit der Sache anerkennen, das heisst, dass wir einen Strahl von etwas empfangen, das in unserer eigenen Natur schlummert - unbewusst und ungeweckt - und das uns durch einen lnstinkt enthiillt und offenbart wird, der feiner und michtiger im Schildern ist als unser eigener; ein Strahl der Wahrheit durchfghrt uns - eine Vision der Harmonien, die nicht heute, aber vielleicht morgen zerlegt oder verstanden werden kann. enn dies so ist, woher kommen dann Korruptionen wie die Renaissance? Von falscher Bildung; von der Verwechslung des Seltsamen mit dem SchGnen, der verhangnisvollen Neigung, die Emptindung, die das Selts ame in uns hervorruft, als Wirkung des Sch6nen anzu- sehen; und diese Neigung steigert sich in dem Masse, wie die Zivilisation sich von der Natur entfernt und in Unkenntnis oder zum Trotz des nattirlichen Gesetzes iibereinstimmungen herstellt. Die Auffassung des Schdnen bei den alten Vb;lkern, den Mongolen, Indern, Arabern, Agyptern, Griechen und Goten war durchaus richtig. Sie besassen die Kenntnis der Schb;nheit in hochentwickeltem Sinne, und ihr Werk ist uns heute so verstindlich, dass eine andere und wahrere Renaissance daraus entstehen wird, welche das tote Holz davon abhauen und den aufgehtiuften Kehricht von Jahrhunderten falscher Erziehung beiseite fegen wird. Sie wird durch eine Riickkehr zu einfachen abstrakten Formen, die in Harmonie mit der Natur stehen, kommen, zuerst durch ein vereinfachendes Verfahren. Nachdem wir dann die geistigen Lehren in uns aufgenommen haben, welche der Osten fihig ist, den Westen zu lehren, kdnnen wir auf dieser Basis die heher entwickelten Formen, deren unser heher entwickeltes Leben bediirfen wird, aufbauen. Die Natur in diesem Sinne, auf diese Weise gesucht, kann uns allein von der hoffnungs- losen Verwirrung der Ideen retten, die aus der Behauptung entstanden ist, dass Schdnheit ein Gebilde der Laune sei, ein Einfall der Fantasie, dem einen gb;ttlich, dem andern widersinnig, |
