Henat ord , agen ~ of t he Missouri pacif ic Railr oad spoke very highl y of the :Mormon people and proved to be of g re a t assistance in El de r Morgan ' s obtaining good r ates · f·or t ne Harmon emigrants . The securing or favorabl e r a t e s , howeve r , did not prove to be an easy task . ~ ~ot until ne a rly noon they a rrive a t a meeting of mincls that El der Morgan thought might prove s a tis fac tory and workabl e . Happy in what he had been able to a ccomplish with the r a ilroad officials , J ohn Horgan le :rt Chattanooga on the afte rn oon of october 25 , 1877 , via train and arrived a t Rome , Georg i a a t 9 :30p.m. putting up a t the Rome House !'or tha t night . The f ollowing morning he went to the Harper h ome where he had breakf·ast and then d rove in to town ;vhere he met El ders Joseph standing and Mur phy and several of the othe r brethren . In the aft e rnoon , he went out to the William ranning home where he stayed tha t ni gh~ . Time was n ow dr awing ne a r f or the long ~r e jected journey west and t he re was much to do in getting t he saints ready . Early on t he morning ~ of t he 27th he wen t to t he John B. Dani el's home where he had a long t al k with t ha t famil y ; then , while t here , he wrote a number of letters; had dinne r with t he Daniel's tamil y and then went to William ~.rann ings where he spent t ne even ing . A nice group of f riends had gathered there and some o:r the gi rls sang songs I or the enj oymen t o± all . Tha t night he r e turned to the Daniel home wh ere he stayed . oc tober 28th was Sunday again and a t 11 a .m. he held mee ting with fair attendance and in the evening hel d church again . He spoke a t both meetings and close attention was pai d and an excellent spirit preva iled . |
