Show Diseases of the Heart (ICD-9 Codes: 390-398, 402, 404-429) (1995 Total Deaths from Diseases of the Heart in Utah = 2,843) Diseases of the heart include rheumatic heart disease, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, hypertensive heart disease, and diseases of the valves and vessels connecting to the heart. Generally, the rate for heart disease has steadily declined in Utah. The United States rate has also declined, but not as rapidly. Utah's death rate from cardiovascular disease is lower than any other state. This is in spite of the fact that Utah falls well below the national median and ranks 47th out of 50 states in the percentage of persons who reported ever having their cholesterol checked for 1995. The most important factor contributing to Utah's low rate is the low smoking rate^ Other risk factors that are important to monitor when dealing with heart disease are: high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease, high blood cholesterol, obesity and diabetes. The most effective way to combat heart disease is to promote a healthier lifestyle. Utah's males continue to be almost twice as likely to die from diseases of the heart than are females. This may be partially explained by physiological and genetic differences, exercise patterns, differences in stress management, and higher smoking rates among males. Table 36.
