In the construction of railways through Indian lands a systematic compliauce by companies with the couditions expressed in the right-of-way acts will prevent much u~~necessardye lay. 1 therefore quote the requirements, which have been stated in previous reports. Each com-pany should file in this office- , (1) Acopy of its articles of incorporation, duly oertified to by the proper offioers under its corporateseal. (.2.) I n the absence of a m A - - epeoid provisions with regmd to the length of line to he represented upon the maps of definite loontion, they shonld he so prepared as to represent sections of 26 miles each. If the lioeoasses through surveyed land.. the.y should show its location aeou-ratsly aocordine to the sectional subdivisions of the sorvey ; and if through nnyr-veyed land, it should he oarefully indicatecl with regsrd to its general direotiou m d the natural objects, farms, eto., dong the ronte. Each of these maps should bear the affidavit of the ohief engineer, setting forth that the survey of the route of t,ho campany'a road from - to - , a diatanoe of - miles (giving termini and diatanoe), wsa made by him (or under his direction), as ohief engineer, under authority of the company, on or between certain dates (giving the arume), and that each survey is soourately represented on the map. The affidavit of the ohief engi-neer must be siped by him officislly andverified by tho oertifioateaof the president of the oompany, attested by its secret~irsu nder its corporate seal, ~wttingfo rth that tho person aigning the affidavit was either the ohief engineer or wna employed for the purpose of making such survey, e i e h w a s done under the zuthority of the com-pany.
