Show ME M0 RAN 0 U M March 17, 1994 TO: Roger FROM: Don SUBJECT: St. George Social Hall Rehabilitation I am generally aware of the work proposed for the St. George Social Hall. have had conversations with the architect for the project, Kim Campbell of JHCH Architects, St. George, regarding adobe stabilization and conservation. Also, at Bob Nicholson's request I have attended two on site meetings where the architect described the proposed work to interested parties. I know the architect has prepared construction documents for the project, but I have not had an opportunity to review them. Based on the architect's verbal descriptions, it appears that the proposed work will be No Effect or No Adverse Effect. Much of the damage that was caused by the previous owner in its sugar beet seed operation will be repaired. The main auditorium and its historic finishes will be retained, but the moveable floor will not be made operable. The partially excavated area below the floor will be cleaned out and provisions will be made for viewing the working parts used historically to lower and raise the floor. A modest proscenium arch will be installed between the auditorium and the east crosswing of the building to form a stage. The main floorplan will not be changed and the ancillary functions such as toilet rooms, dressing rooms, and offices will be placed in the basement or sidewings. A few structural modifications will be required, such as tieing the adobe end walls of the building to new interior shearwalls, but the finish of the shearwalls will be compatible with the historic finish of the walls being covered. The exterior walls will be repaired and rebuilt with adobe, and the existing stucco finish of the building will be restored using a new, breathable, synthetic stucco. All exterior woodwork will be retained and restored. It appears that the owner, architect, and interested parties are working diligently to make this a sensitive and successful rehabilitation project. |
