This building has significance in the following areas: Events - It was one of the first public buildings constructed in the hostile southern Utah desert by Brigham Young's "Cotton Missionaries". Construction began in 1864. Lives of Persons - It was commissioned by Brigham Young to offer culture to the settlers living in an otherwise deprived state. Distinctive Characteristics - The building is classic example of early southwest adobe construction. Its combination of very simple environmentally rooted buildings system combined with an attempt at elegance through sophisticated trim and moldings is unique to the region .
