Show 6 In 1916, two years of Normal work was added, this work being of college grade; and the next year the name of the school was changed to the Dixie Normal College. The Woodward School was at this time made available for practice teaching. was added in 1921. The junior college division In 1923 the first two years of high school work was turned over to the county, and the name of the institution was changed to the Dixie College. 1 With the beginning of the St. George Stake Academy in 1911, a "golden age" in Dixie opera begins. A discussion of opera activities at St. George during this period rightly begins with the story of the Social Hall, the scene of so many successful musical and dramatic performances. The older building, the St. George Hall, had been used since its completion for many public programs, but in 1875 it was sold to private ownership and became the Woolley, Lund and Judd store, and another place was immediately needed. Some use was made of the small Gardner's Club Hall, but more adequate facilities were needed. To meet thes~ needs, the settlers built on to a building known as the "Wine eellar," on Main Street where Diagonal Street intersects. This building consisted of a large basement used to store the wine produced in that region, and an upper room, size 23 by 56 feet. An addition was made joining this building to the west, the extension being 35 by 50 feet. The old part of the building was then used as a stage and side wings, the new section being used to seat the patrons. A seating capacity of about 400 people was afforded in the completed structure.
