THE PROPOSED OPERA COMPANY Our organization. is comprised of a number of incividuuls. each ",,'ith their own specific talents and capabilities: ROBERT TODD brings an extensive background in film and theatrical productions to the group. He studied Film Production at Los Angeles City College. and went on to work in numerous film productions, including the GRIZZLY ADM'iS TV series, where he both wrote and worked on the film crew. He has written. produced. and directed stage plays in Las Vegas and the Salt L~ke area. He was the film critic for his college newspaoer. He is also an avid film buff and historian. JIM ELLEDGE brings a background in both the arts and business. He is a songwriter . musician, set builder and designer and has worked on a number of theatrical oroductions both here in Utah and his native Oklahoma. WYNN STODDARD is an exoerienced stage director. choreographer. teacher. and performer. His credits include: BYU Int'l. Folk Dancers (choreographer & director), Silver Sours Revue (director), Theatre 138 (director. teacher). Playmill Theatre (director, choreographer). and Ricks Folk Dancers (choreogra?her. teacher. director) . .l\lthough each brings their 0\0111 style and experience to the group, they complement each other to form a cohesive and creative team. OUR PROPOSAL What we propose is a year-round packa;:-e of entertai:1ment consisting of plays, concerts, and silent and classic movies. The centerpiece of our program will be a professional theatrical company of mostly local talent ....,ho will present a series of plays during the peak winter months. Our program will be packaged after the highly successful Playmill Theatre in West Yellowstone. Montana, and other successful summer theatre groups. The season will consist of four different melodramas. musical comedies, and variety acts. running on consecutive nights throughoL:t the season. But. unlike these theatres who caoitalize on the brisk sum· mer tourist trade of that area. our olan is to caoitalize on the exoanding winter tourist season here in St. eeorge. Alor.g with melodramas. musicals. and variety acts. we will oresent olays that were actually oresented in the original Ooera House almost a cen· tury ago. Above all. we will try to caoture the flavor Dnd atmos· ohere of the time. Our seating capacity will be 250+. We want it intimate enough to give everyone their money's worth. but not too small. With the acoustics in the Opera House, it promises to be the best atmosphere in the area to enJoy a performance. OLD-TIV£ MOVIE PACKAGE During the "~ff-season", we will offer the entertainme:1t option of a serie~ of silent and sound classics, such as the films of Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Buster Keaton, john Wayne, John Ford, Frank Capra, Bogart, etc. As an example, we'll have a month of a "Chaplin Festival", showing eight of his best movies during the month. With a reasonable admission charge, it promises to be an enjoyable package for the entire family, and a welcome change from the normal dose of first-run movies and TV viewing. We will have six shows oer week, with a double feature and a cartoon or newsreel every night. OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS As stated. we olan to make the Ooera House the Cultural Center for the St. George area. We will be the resident home of the St. George Youth Sym?hony, and will accomodate them and their schedule. Other programs which we will showcase will be touring ballets,' symphonies, special recitals, etc . For day use, we will sponsor or accomodate acting classes, dance classes, and other artistic activities. Also, we will accommodate any walking tours during the day. Other possible projects: an alternative radio station with an emphasis on the folk-oriented sounds of the '70's & '80's, along with other musical forms (jazz, classical, etc.), and a St. George cultural calendar, with a listing of coming attractions for cultural events in the St. George area. LEASE AGREEMENT We would like to be able to lease the facility for the entire year, both for our own projects and those who would want to use the building. As stated, we will be willing to accommodate other groups who have legitimate cultural and civic events of their own, and will sub-lease the building over a short period. We would like to lease the Opera House at first on a shortterm basis, possibly a 2 or 3-year period. with a renewable option. Within that period, both parties should be able to see if it is a productive enterprise. Then. we would like to sign a long-term option, possibly a 5 or lO-year lease. at ~ur option. WORK WITH COMMUNITY We will also work with the local businesses in creating oackages for weekend tourists from outside the St. George area consisting of motel accommodations, food discounts . recreation, and entertair.ment at a special price. |
