In H. brunnea it is 8t inches long, whilst in P1'oteles lt is short and globular, rneasurino- only one illch in length. The large intestine exclusive of crecu~ measures 26~ inches, and is provided with thick muscular walls. In H. striata the great gut measures 3 feet, and in H. brunnea 2 feet 6 inches in length, whilst ill Proteles, exclusive of the crecum, it measures 14 inches. In conllexiun with the lower end of the rectum are two anal glands, which pour their contents into a pouch situated immediately above the anus. These glands, which have been previously described!, resemble more closely, both in respect of number and size, the corresponding structures in Proteles than those of any other species of Hycena. The following Table shows the length of the intestines, together with that of the body, in the different species of Hyceua; but it is right to state, with reference to the latter measuremellt of H. crocuta, that we have tak.en it to be the same as in H. brunnea, having unfo r~un ately omItted to ascertain the dimensions of the specimrn exammed; the measurements of the other species are those of Daubenton, M urie, and Flower respectively.
