Show 5. mSTORY The commercial structure known as the Senate Saloon, located at 111-113 25th Street, Ogden, was built circa 1889 (National Register of Historic Places 1977; Sanborn Map Company 1884; 1890). At that time the property was owned by George W. Murphy and his wife Ida E. Murphy (WCR 1881). Prior to the construction of the structure known as the Senate Saloon historical records indicate that this property was vacant (Sanborn Map Company 1884). The builder of the structure is unknown. According to Weber County property records the property where the structure now stands came into the possession of the Murphy family in 1881 when Mills H. Beardsley deeded Y2 interest in the property to George W. Murphy for the initial sum of $350.00 (WCR 1881). The following year an additional sum of$3500.00 was paid by George W. Murphy to Mills H. Beardsley (WCR 1882). George Williamson Murphy was born in New Hartford, New York circa 1843 (Ogden Standard Examiner 1932a:20). George W. Murphy married Ida E. Moulding on November 6, 1876 (Ogden Standard Examiner 1922:13; FHL n.d.). Ida Elizabeth Moulding was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1856, a daughter of William Henry Moulding and Elizabeth Wickens (Ogden Standard Examiner 1922:13). Together George W. and Ida E. Murphy had two children (Ogden Standard Examiner 1932:20a; 1932:14b; 1922:13 ). George W. Murphy was a veteran of the Civil War who migrated west in 1869 (Ogden Standard Examiner 1932a:20). George W. Murphy worked for the Central Pacific Company for a short period before becoming a prominent Ogden Grocer who served the community for over 50 years (Sanborn Map Company 1884; R. L. Polk & Co.l890; Ogden City 1995; Ogden Standard Examiner 1932a:20). George W. Murphy was a charter member of the Weber Masonic Lodge and a member of the Dix Logan post No.2 G. A. R.. Ida E. Murphy came to Salt Lake City in 1861 with her parents (Deseret News 1922:6), the family was to later settle in Ogden (FHL n.d.). George W. and Ida E. Murphy were members of the Episcopalian Church of the Good Shepherd in Ogden. Ida E. M. Murphy died, after a prolonged illness, September 23, 1922 at the age of 65 (Ogden Standard Examiner 1922:13). George W. Murphy died February 11 , 1932 at the age of 88 (Deseret News 1932:5; Ogden Standard Examiner 1932:20a; 1932:14b) George W. and Ida E. Murphy retained title to the property until October 1889 when the individual parcel upon which the building known as the Senate Saloon now stands was deeded to William A. Scudder and Joseph Carlson for a sum of $5,500.00 (WCR 1889). The property is currently owned by Dean R. Perkins of Ogden eWCR 1995). |
