Show Ein Studium der grossen Weltarchitektur sollte in Hinsicht allein auf den Geist, der in den Formen ausgedriickt ist, damit gleichen Schritt halten. Aber vor allen Dingen sollte das Studium der Natur der Materiale gelehrt werden, die Natur der Werkzeuge und der Vorgange, die ZLI Gebote stehen und die Natur der Arbeit, die sie berufen sind, auszufiihren. Eine solche Erziehung war den grossen Kiinstlern Japans zu teil. Obgleich sie nicht intellektuell selbstbewusst war, so zweifle ich nicht, dass die Lehrzeit des Mittelalters gleiche Re- sultate erzielte. Deutsche und osterr-eichische Kunstschulen gehen zu diesen Ideen zuriick. Bis der Schiiler gelehrt wird, das Schone von innen heraus zu betrachten, wird es keine bedeutenden, lebenden Gebaude geben, welche im Aggregat den Geist wahrer Architektur zeigen. Ein Architekt in diesem neubelebten Sinne ist dann ein Schaffender, der von innen heraus durch eine Auffassung der organischen Natur seiner Aufgabe geschult ist, der seine Werkzeuge und seine Gelegenheit kennt, der seine Probleme mit soviel Schonheitssinn, wie nur die Cotter ihm verliehen haben, lost. Der, der von der Natur seines Unternehmens selbst geschult ist, ist der einzige sichere Bildner. Bei gemeinsamer Arbeit mit ihm zeigt es sich, dass er Herr der Mittel ist, die ZLI einem bestimmten Ende fiihren. Er erwirbt eine Technik im Gebrauch seiner Werkzeuge und Materialien, die ebenso vollstandig und in jeder Hinsicht ebenso bewunderungswert sein mag, wie die Herr- schaft, die ein Musiker iiber die Hilfsmittel seines lnstrumentes besitzt. In keinem anderen Geiste kann diese in irgendeinem lebensfahigen Sinne erworben werden, und ohne sie - nun - ist eine gute Kopie das sicherste. scheidener Parasit werden. Wenn man nicht leben kann, so kann man wenigstens ein be- it dem Mut, den eine Uberzeugung der Wahrheit dieses Gesichtspunktes verliehen hat, sind die Probleme in dieser Arbeit zu l&en versucht worden. In jenem Geiste sind sie aus- gearbeitet worden; mit welchem Grade von Misserfolg oder Erfolg kann niemand besser wissen als ich. Urn fur den Schiiler von Wert zu sein, mussen sie von innen heraus und nicht von dem Gesichtspunkte des Mannes aus studiert werden, der die Sache nur oberflachlich aus den Tiefen der Renaissance betrachtet. Insoweit sie als organische Losungen der Bedingungen, zu deren Erfiillung sie nur dastehen, aufgefasst werden, mit Riicksicht auf die Beschrankungen, die ihnen durch unsere industriellen Bedingungen auferlegt sind, und insoweit sie in sich selbst eine Harmonie der Idee von Form und Behandlung tragen, die etwas ziemlich Schones aus ihnen in Beziehung zum Leben macht, werden sie niitzlich sein. Sucht man in ihnen aber ebenso bedeutende cha- rakteristische Schonheit der Form und der Ziige, wie man sie bei denen der Griechen, Goten und Japaner findet, werden sie enttauschend wirken, und ich kann nur hinzufiigen, dass es noch ein wenig ZLI fruh zur Erreichung eines solchen Zieles ist. Aber die Eigenart des Stils in dem LIII- bestimmbaren Sinne, dass sie etwas Charakteristisches van jedem organischen Dinge ist, diese 15 |
