Show Von dieser Lebensfreude gibt es nirgends deutlichere Beweise als in Italien. Gebgude, Bilder und Skulpturen scheinen wie die Blumen am Wege geboren ZLI sein und sich selbst in das Dasein hineinzusingen. Im Geiste ihrer Idee betrachtet, fldssen sie uns die wahre Musik des Lebens ein. Kein e&t italienisches Gebtiude scheint sich in Italien nicht an seinem Platze zu fGhlen: Alle sind gliicklich zufrieden mit dem Schmuck und der Farbe, die sie so nattirlich tragen wie die Felsen und B5ume und Gartenabhgnge, welche eins mit ihnen sind. Wo immer sich eine Zypresse erhebt, da gruppieren sich, wie hingezaubert, alle diese Dinge in harmonischer und voll- sttindiger Weise. Das Geheimnis dieses unaussprechlichen Reizes wtirde vergebens in der verdiinnten Luft der Scholastik oder der pedantischen schonen Kunst gesucht werden. Es ist eng mit dem Boden verwachsen. Es ist so einfach, dass es fiir moderne Geister, welche in geistiger Gymnastik trainiert sind, in gar keiner Beziehung zu grossen Zwecken zu stehen scheint, ebensowenig wie eine Handvoll feuchter Erde. Es liegt so nah, dass es fast allgemein iibersehen wird. Am Wege zieht uns irgendeine Blume durch ihre ungewiihnlich leuchtenden Farben oder ihre Formenschijnheit an; machen wir vor ihr Halt, so nehmen wir ihre vollkommene Lieb- lichkeit dankbar in uns auf; wenn wir nun aber versuchen, das Gehcimnis ihres Reizes zu ent- decken, so finden wir, dass die Bliite, die zuerst unsere Aufmerksamkeit fesselte, in engster Be- ziehung zu der Textur und der Gestalt ihrer Blatter steht, wir entdecken eine seltsame Sympathie zwischen der Form der Blume und dem System, nach welchem die Bkitter urn den Stengel ge- ordnet sind. Und diese Beobachtung fiihrt uns zu einer anderen, zu der charakteristischen Ge- wohnheit des Wachstums und der daraus resultierenden Natur des Baus, dem sein Weg und seine Gestalt in den Wurzeln vorgeschrieben ist, die in der warmen Erde verborgen liegen, und durch das bestindige Bedecken mit vermoderten Blattern feucht gehalten werden. Diese Bauart geht von dem Allgemeinen zum Besonderen in ganz unvermeidlicher Weise i.iber, bis sie schliesslich die Bliite erreicht, welche in ihren Linien und Formen die Natur des Baues zeigt, welcher sie erzeugte. Es ist eine organische Einheit. Cesetz und Ordnung ist die Grundlage ihrer vollendeten Anmut und Schdnheit. Anmut und Schanheit sind der Ausdruck der fundamentalen Bedingungen in Linie, Form und Farbe, und ihr Vorhandensein dient dazu, sie nach irgendeinem Plane vollendet ZLI gestalten. Wir k6nnen keineswegs beweisen, dass Schonheit das Resultat dieser harmonischen inneren Bedingungen ist; wir finden, dass das, was uns durch Jahrhunderte als Schb;nheit ange- zogen hat, diese Elemente des Geistes und der Ordnung in seinem innersten Wesen kennt. Auch bedarf es nicht langer Zeit, urn die Tatsache festzustellen, dass keine dauernde Schiinheit diese Elemente, die immer als Bedingung ihres Daseins gegenwsrtig sind, nicht kennt. Es wird sich bei jedem Studium von Formen oder grossen Stilarten, welche die Menschheit fiir schdn gehalten hat, zeigen, dass diejenigen, welche sich am kingsten erhielten, die sind, welche im grdssten Um- fange diese Bedingungen erfiillt haben. Das Wachstum einer Sache kommt fiir uns nicht in Be- tracht, weil die Natur des Lebens ausser unserem Bereich liegt, und ein Studium in dieser Be- ziehung ganz zwecklos ware. 4 |
