Show anderen Verhaltnissen entlehnt sind, zu gebrauchen, muss ebenso enden, wie die Renaissance endet - mit volligem Verlust des natiirlichen Zusammenhangs mit dem Seelenleben des Volkes; es wird etwas Fremdes in den Hinden der ,,Professoren"""", das wenig mehr bedeutet als eine Maske fiir irgendein Geschehnis oder ein Zeichen weltlicher Macht fiir diejenigen, deren Leben durch sie belastet, aber nicht zum Ausdruck gebracht ist; ein schrecklicher Verlust fiir das Leben, fiir den die Wissenschaft niemals entschidigen kann. Bauwerke werden immer der kostbarste Besitz in der Menschen Umgebung sein, das, was am meisten Bildungswert hat. Aber bis das Volk wieder Freude empfinden wird an der Architektur als an einer lebenden Kunst, die man den Gebguden aller wirklich grossen Perioden aufgepragt sieht, oder vielmehr solange, als ver- derbte ldeale die Maske fiir wirkliche Tatsachen und Zage bewahren - die Maske, die die Re- naissance trug, solange wird die Architektur etwas Totes bleiben. In der ganzen Bewegung kann man die Kunst nur zu dem Niveau eines Hilfsmittels herabgedriickt sehen. Welche Zukunft hat ein Volk, das damit zufrieden ist? Es ist dann ein Volk, dessen Leben in jedem edlen Sinne des Wortes gelebt ist - ein Ueberleben von Parasiten, die sich von vergangener G&se ntihren; ein Volk, fiir das Frieden und Wohlbefinden auf der Lebensreise das einzige Ideal ist auf dem Wege zu ihrer Vernichtung durch irgendein barbarisches Geschlecht, das ldeale und heftiges Verlangen nach ihrer Verwirklichung in edler konkreter Form hat. In Amerika ist man durch diese Zustinde in schlimmere Irrtiimer geraten als in Europa, weil die Amerikaner keine traditionellen Formen haben, mit Ausnahme derer, die nach und nach von allen Vb;lkern angehauft worden sind, die sich aber nicht ohne Opfer den neuen Zustsnden anpassen; und folglich gibt es such in Amerika keine wahre Verehrung fiir Tradition. Da die Architektur eine Notwendigkeit ist, so treffen die amerikanischen Architekten ihre Auswahl unter dem Lager ,,fertiger Architektur"""" in der ganzen Welt, und sie haben den meisten Erfolg, wenn sie Form fiir Form, Linie fiir Linie wiedergeben und Einzelheiten nach photographischen Auf- nahmen von den Originalen anfertigen. Gewiss, das geht. Die Menschen werden architektonisch eingekleidet und iiberdacht. Die modernen Bequemlichkeiten werden sehr geschickt, wie wir zugeben miissen, eingeschmuggelt. Aber ist dies Architektur? Formte die Tradition in dieser Weise grosse Stile? Liegt in dieser vielziingigen Verwirrung geborgter Formen ein grosser Geist, der Ordnung aus diesem Chaos schaffen wird? Lebenskraft, Einheit und Griisse aus Hohlheit und Disharmonie? Die ldeale der Renaissance werden uns nicht retten, denn die Renaissance selbst war unorganisch. Ein Begriff dessen, was eine organische Architektur bildet, wird uns zu besseren Dingen fiihren, sobald er einmal in Herz und Geist der Menschen gepflanzt ist, deren Mittel und Kenntnis, deren wirkliche Macht unzweifelhaft ist, und die nicht durch Hilfsmittel und Formen, deren Natur und Ursprung sie nicht in Beziehung zu dem Geist, der sie erschaffte, studiert haben, im Banne gehalten werden. Die Natur dieser Formen wird nicht in lebensfshigem Sinne in der bildenden Kunst, such nicht in irgendeiner Schule, in der Architekten gebildet werden, gelehrt. |
