Abstract: In the late 19th century the number of elderly poor increased significantly in America. Various religious groups decided that, instead of placing their elderly members into state-run poorhouses, they would form their own private homes for the elderly. The author examines this phenomenon primarily in New York City, 1870-1970. Protestants took care of members who had some financial resources; Catholics and Jews accepted poverty as natural and accepted all members. Documentation: 2 tables, 79 notes. Abstracter: J. J.
