I building's construction. both nationally .and in Ulah. there were institutions for a variety . ofspecial"needs populations -- the mentally insan~. alcoholics and drug addicts, orphans. single mothers, and, of course, medical patients i~ re'gular hospitals -- but there were no facilities specifically devoted to the care of {he cld~rly. . Home care by family members was th¢ ~ost conunon approach to taking care ·of the older populatio.n, though there were also 1?i1bl~c lilmshouses, where persons of every conceivable physical, mental, Bnd social ililnll;nt jwere housed together, often in barely livable conditions. The emergence of the insur';nc~ industry and pension programs in lhe late 19'h and early 20m centuries allowed aging ~erkotls the means to afford assisted living . quarters.·In Umh. Sarah Daft, a successful Sal~ 4ke City businesswoman, saw a gaping community need for such a caretaking facility arid left provisions in her will for the creation of the Sarah Daft Home for the Aged. It wasn't until several years after Sarah Daft's dealb and through the efforts of Mrs. B.A.M. (Jennie) Froiseth tltal the building was actually constructed.
