Show 241 But-well, we're not engaged or anything." "He's not the one, huh?" Sharon shrugged, and Lynn suddenly laughed. "Oh, don't mind me," she said noting Sharon's quizzical face, "I was just thinking about Mike. My husband. Or that is, I guess, my ex-huband." She thought for a moment, looking down at the angel and frowning. "My ex-husband-to-be, anyway. The papers haven't gone through yet." She looked back up at Sharon. "But I was just thinking, when I first met Mike, I knew-I mean I knew-that he was the one. There wasn't a doubt in my mind. And now-" she laughed: it wasn't exactly a bitter laugh, but confused, and in its way, painful. "Well, I guess you never know." "But in a way," Sharon said, "I know: Roger-that's the guy's name-isn't the one." Lynn looked closely at her. "You sound awfully sure of yourself." "I am." "Well, I guess a person doesn't pick someone to love." "No," Sharon agreed, "I guess not." And what she had just said about Roger, she realized, was the truth. But not all the truth. How could she explain it? It bothered her, it made her uneasy when she tried to explain Roger to anyone. She couldn't; she could not even formulate to her own self what he was to her. From the back yard came the shouts of the kids, suddenly increasing in volume until Lynn stood up. "I guess I'd better go back and check on them. See that they're not tearing up the place." |
