Show CHAPTER TWO Less than a month later-a few weeks before the ending of the school year-she was herding the kids out through the church foyer after Sunday mass when she overheard Katie talking. Big mouth Katie. It was difficult not to overhear Katie in any conversation: her strong authoritative voice demanded attention-it carried over the other, scattered conversations in the large room. Like she was talking through a bullhorn. The other woman answered in a feminine voice, lighter, Sharon could barely make out the words: Yes, St. Benedict's was holding an end of the year dance. Her son, Roger, thought he might go. Did Sharon attend such things? "Sharon knows how to dance," Katie said, "but I don't know if she'd like to go. It's up to her." The woman-Mrs. Green-quickly changed the subject, asking about the next meeting of the Legion of Mary. Sharon passed on out through the entrance doors, trailing the two children in each hand. Damn Katie anyway! She was torn between embarrassment-everyone in the foyer must have heard, they could not have helped but hear!-and the desire to learn more about the dance. Should she go back in? It was too late, Katie was already coming out the door by herself. Sharon knew Mrs. Green from Legion meetings which had been held at the Bradshaws, but her son, Roger, she knew only slightly. A large, heavy young man, well over six feet tall-she could wear high heels!- |
