Show 129 open manner. He was laughing the way he did at work. How surprised she was! How pleased! And realizing that this was, indeed, a dream, she welcomed it: at last, she was going to dream about Steve! She had not realized until now how eagerly she had been waiting to dream about him. She was not surprised that he drove Mr. Green's car. Nor that they were going to the Green's house. They turned a corner, and suddenly she was alone in a bedroom. The bed sheets were turned down, there was a small pink night light, which cast the room in a soft, pink glow. And she was waiting for Steve. He was coming down the hall now, she could hear him. She slipped off her coat-why she was dressed in a long, slinky nightgown! How surprised Steve would be* she had not worn a dress, but this nightgown under her coat! She had not known it, of course, until now; but how pleased she was with herself that she had fooled him like this! And once again, he was coming down the hall into the room. But now she was surprised! It was not Steve who came through the door, but Mr. Green-dressed in his sweater, his hair combed-how handsome he was! Her whole body responded, with a warm, open glowing. He began talking, not looking at her, at his ease. Of course: he could not recognize her in these shadows. And then, she had her coat back on-although she had not put it back on, she was wearing it. He assumed that she was Alice. Really, she should tell him that she was not. But it was such fun to fool him like this! How surprised he would be to discover this woman standing before him was her, not Alice. |
