Show 35 on a joyful wave of expectation. That afternoon she sold more cosmetics than in any day since Easter week. She phoned Robbie. Ever since the plan had taken definite form in her mind, she had thought over this call. She felt prepared for any objection he might make. But as she explained it to him, her heart began to pound. Her breath came faster, her hands began to shake. He did not interrupt, did not object, but let her continue until she finished. There was no response for a long minute in which she could hear his breathing on the other end of the line. Was he not going to object? She couldn't believe that. But maybe now he would offer to share a place with her after all. Finally he asked if she had told Katie. She had not. Would she hold off until they had a chance to talk about it over coffee? She would. And then she regretted saying that. But he had hung up. She did not want to have it out with him, she couldn't gain anything doing that-why in the hell had she phoned in the first place? She picked up the receiver and began to dial his number. And then set it back on its cradle. Perhaps, after all, he would want to go in on a place with her. She did not really believe that, though, she realized. But she did believe in her own determination, she fully believed in that. And that was enough. |
