Burton, whose first congressional district included the area of the proposed monument enlargements, told the Deseret News, "Utah is the most beautiful places in the world, and perhaps there are areas to be added to cxis1ing monuments and parks, but I object to its being done in this fashion.',461 Both state papers reported that the presidential proclamation enlarging the national monuments would come with a recommendation that Congress grant both areas national park status. Moss said two new national parks would "be a great boost" to the state's tourist industry. "With five national parks Utah would be the leader among the 50 states."462 Many congressional leaders who felt they should have been consulted in preparing an executive order learned of Johnson 's proposal from newspapers. The Deseret News wrote that when Aspinall, chairman of the I louse Interior Comminee, read about the proposal, he "promptly went through the ceiling.',463 After Aspinall contacted Johnson, a feud erupted between Udall and the White House.
