Show 28 When Palcn's paper was later published in Science Communication, the references to prc-1960s environmental journalism were limited to one sentence deep in the articlc. 72 Ironically, this omission illustrates how the pre- l 960s history of environmental journalism is often ignored in exchange fo r research on more recent issues, stripping the contemporary issues of their context and marginalizing the rich, mostly-unwritten history. 73 In Mass Media and Environmental Conflict, Neuzil and Kovarik addressed the popular misconception that envi ronmental journalism was born w ith the publication of Rachel Carson's Si/enr Spring in 1962, or with the 1970 ce lebration of Earth Day. 74 Kovarik argued that this misconception reflected the lack of research about the history of media and the environment: 75 "Long before the 1960s, serious concerns about environmental issues were closely and hotly debated, with the media involved. From the muckrakers' work in the public hea lth reform movements to scientific and po litical fights to conserve western lands and resources, journalists participated in many environmental controversies of their era."76 John Palen, '"Objectivity as Independence: Creating the Society of Environmental Journalists, 19891997 ," Science Comm11nication 21 (December 1999): 157. 12 73 Thc origins of environmental journalism are also confused by Sharon M. Friedman's '"And the Beat Goes On; The Third Decade of Environmental Journalism," in The Environmental Communication Yearbook, ed. Susan L. Senecah (Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. 2004), 175-187; Friedman called the 1970s the first decade of environmental journalism.
