Show CIIAPTER2 LITERATURE REVIEW This chapter examines scholarly literature associated with Utah journalism history, Utah environmental history, the relationship of journalism and the national parks, and environmental journalism history. Then, based on gaps in the literature, it argues for further research in the evolution of environmental reporting in different geographic regions across the twentieth century. Utah Journalism I listory As with most Utah history, Utah journalism history focuses primarily on its relationship to the predominant religious organization - the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The journalism history of Utah as written is a story of the LDS church and the conflicts between church-owned media and media owned by other interests. While ignoring this influence would produce an incomplete picture of Utah's past, focusing too heavily on it skews that history - leaving critical questions unexamined. Furthermore, this incomplete history is mostly descriptive and is told from an institutional perspective. A review of the Utah journalism history literature reveals numerous unexamined events and topics - environmental journalism history among them. |
