Show 46 when legislation related to the park was debated, every edition of the newspaper was examined. For news coverage of Zion National Park, dedicated in 1919, articles were retrieved by examining every edition of The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News from May 1919 - six months before the park was established - until September 1920, when the park was dedicated. Although Congress passed legislation to create Bryce Canyon National Park in 1924, it was not until 1928 that the state met the fedcrally~imposcd conditions that allowed the park to become official. This research examined editions of the two state newspapers for one year and one month starting in July 1923, when President Warren G. Harding signed an executive order designating Bryce Canyon a national monument. July 1924 marked one month after the bill elevating the monument to a national park was signed into law. The research also examines news coverage from August and September 1928, to cover the time period when the park designation became official. The reason for the narrower time frame surrounding the 1928 date is because the newspapers received short notice that the final conditions for the park's designation had been met, or were being negotiated, until just prior to the 1928 announcement. 122 The New York Times has a fully searchable online database that spans the time covered by this research. Keyword searches with the official names and alternative names 122 /Jcseret News, '"Surprise Sprung in Creating Park," September 18, 1928, sec. 2, I.
