Udall regards the Canyonlands area in southeastern Utah as a 'magnificent addition' to the national park system.',4 48 In a speech on the Senate floor celebrating the creation of the national park, Bennett said the legislation "brings to a climax over 12 years of work on my part and on the part of the people of Utah and the National Park Service to obtain deserved national recognition to the Canyonlands country.',4 49 But Bennett took a different tack in a letter he sent to Udall before President Johnson signed the legislation. The Jetter was reprinted in The Salt lake Tribune: "The people of Utah arc giving up the great potential mineral wealth in the Canyonlands country so that the people of America might be able to preserve it for its aesthetic and scenic qualities.
