Show ACKNOWLEDGMENTS My parents introduced me to Utah's national parks. Photo albums of family vacations show dirty, happy siblings against backgrounds of red-rock cliffs and vast chasms that remind me ofmy mom's 1crrified words: ,;Matthew! Back slowly away from the edge!" As I dove into this research, those memories climbed through the crags of my brain. Thank you, Mom and Dad. Thanks also to my wife, Anna, who has read every word of this dissertation. She was supportive, encouraging, and tolerant of this affair with research and writing. I will enjoy getting to know her again. On days when Anna and I both worked, our son, Miles, was in good hands. If not for all the family and friends who temporarily adopted our son, I never would have found the time to finish my dissertation. Miles wi ll miss Mondays with aunt Michelle, Wednesdays with aunt Jill, Fridays with grandma Pam and grandpa Roger, days w ith Babi Bronia, Leslie, Becca, and other friends and neighbors. Thanks also to my dissertation committee: Glen Feighery, Nickieann Fleener, Kimberley Mangun, Paul Reeve, and David Vergobbi. They made this dissertation bencr with their questions, suggestions, and editing. My guide through this dissertation and through my graduate studies was G len Feighery.
