Show 151 up, and assuming Udall's plan had clearance from congressional leaders, said, "And there is [sic] more that will be set aside before this administration cnds.'"'56 Members of Congress and journalists demanded answers. Johnson, who was surprised by controversy he had been assured did not exist, demanded answers from Udall. Udall briefed the Utah delegation but swore them to secrecy. Several hours after the briefing, however, someone leaked the story to the press. Both state newspapers reported the plans, but neither identified the leak. 457 The papers reported that the proposal would more 1han double the size of Arches, from 34,010 acres to 83,010. Capitol Reef would expand from 39,172 to 254,172 acres.458 Short on facts about Udall's plans for Utah's national monuments, The Salt lake Tribune and Deseret News sought reaction from Moss, who said he would demand hearings before any action was taken on the president's directive. Both papers quoted Utah's other senator, Wallace F. Bennett, who said the expansions were unnecessarily large and should go through the "normal legislative proeess."459 The Deseret News included comments from Utah Governor Calvin L. Rampton, who asked that the president delay action until Congress held hearings in Utah. The newspaper characterized reaction from Rampton, Moss, and others as opposition to the 456 Lyndon B. The figures reported by the two newspapers differed slightly because the Deseret News rounded the numbers. The Salt lake Tribune rcporicd that Arches would grow from 34.010 aert'S 10 83,010 acres and Capitol Reef would e., pand from 39,172 to 254,172 acres. The Deseret News reponed that the final acreage was 83,000 for Arches and 255,000 for Capitol Reef. 4 'lR 0 ~59 Salt lake Trib1111e, ·Park Status for Utah," January 18, 1969; Desere.1 News, "Park ~iat Draws Fire," January 18, 1969. |
