Show National significance., Hill Air Force Base is located in Davis County; U. S. Steel's Geneva Works, one of the largest steel mills west of the Mississippi River is located in Utah County; Hercules Powder Co., Litton Industries, Sperry Rand, and Cennecott Copper Corporation are located in Salt Lake County; and Thiokol Chemical Company, producing solid fuel propellants, is located in Box Elder County. In terms of population growth, Utah increased 18.9 percent from 1960 to 1970 according to the 1970 census figures. 171 Population growth can be expected to continue without the Unit ( refer to paragraph h.( 4) below). Without an additional water supply, however, continued growth would ultimately require re- evaluation of water use priorities. Water shortages are occurring now in peak requirement months in the Bonneville Basin of the Unit area. The Bureau of Indian Affairs activity, including Bottle Hollow and Lower Stillwater Reservoirs and the Wildlife Management areas, would provide fishing and hunting opportunities for the Indians. These facilities would also afford a source of income for them through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses and other goods and services offered to the public. Additional income would enhance the economic status and quality of life of the Ute Indian Tribe. ( 1) Effect _ of Unit Construetion Activity The total Unit cost is estimated at approximately $ 490 million. This amount would be spent over a period of 15 to 20 years. Based on Bureau of Reclamation construction experience about 25 percent, or $ 125 million, of the total could be expected to be local payrolls. This would be basic or new income, the kind which has the multiplier effect. Over a 20- year period the payrolls would average $ 6 aiillion per year, which would employ about 800 workers full time based on Utah's nonagricul- tural wage levels. Virtually all of this money would be spent locally by the workers and a secondary impact would produce new payrolls and profits for persons in service industries. Using the rule- of- thumb of 1.1 persons in service industries for each employee in basic employment, the Unit construction would directly and indirectly provide employment for about 1,703 persons per year over the 20- year period. This is equal to 1 percent of the present total nonagricultural employment in the area. 383 |
