| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER FOLLOW- P INTERVIEW J R 22 2004 Ikawa cooked and served. On March 28th of 1945, Major Matoba ordered n ign Hall executed. Captain Sato, and First Lieutenant Heraki, supervised. This was when orporal Nakamura was ordered to behead Hall or to face the same thing himself which he did. Liver and thigh flesh were removed and sent to Major Matoba's headquarters. Konishi, who was Major Matoba's orderly, refused to cook the flesh and ran away. [turns tape off) ROB: Also, February 18, 1945, radioman James Wesley Dye and an unidentified mechanic were captured on Ani Jima, which is the northernmost island. The mechanic was taken to an area called Nakayama Toge, and speared to death with bamboo spears by privates Oshida and Morito, supervised by First Lieutenant Yamashita. On February 23rd 1945, Dye was sent to the Yoake wireless station. This was the main communication station in the Bonin Islands. It was on Chichi Jima. He was executed on February the 24th. First beheading by Ensign Hayashi, did not kill Dye. Lieutenant Sasaki, completed the beheading and removed the liver. It was delivered to petty officer Suzuki, Commander Y oshii' s cook. Commander Y oshii was the commanding officer of the Y oake wireless station. Party that night by Commander Y oshii, where liver was eaten by him and his officers. On February 23, 1945, Lynn J. Frazier, petty officer, US Navy Reserve, was beaten to death, by Captain Nakajima on Chichi Jima, with an empty sake bottle. When Frazier was captured, Captain Nakajima was drinking with some other officers and went out when he found there was an American captive. He was going to interrogate him. Well, Captain Nakajima didn't speak English and poor Frazier didn't speak Japanese. 3 |
